Old City Cemetery

Established in 1806, Old City Cemetery remains the oldest Virginia municipal cemetery still in use. A beautiful and impressive 27-acre public garden, the cemetery located in Lynchburg, Virginia also operates as a “history park.” With five small “house” museums on grounds, the cemetery is one of the busiest and most popular attractions in the City. Despite operating as an active place of burial and remembrance, over 33,000 visitors come see this historic site annually.

The five small museums, including the Chapel and Columbarium, Pest House Medical Museum, Hearse House and Caretakers’ Museum, Station House Museum, and Mourning Museum, allow visitors to learn about the diverse population buried on site. Through these museums, tourists and locals can interpret the history of the Cemetery, the City of Lynchburg, and the significance of the 20,000 people buried there. The grounds also include hundreds of varieties of native and heirloom plants. The cemetery’s proudest display remains the largest pubic collection of antique roses in the state of Virginia.

The Old City Cemetery Chapel also continues to operate as a popular attraction on site. A convenient and scenic venue for meetings, lectures, memorial services, and weddings. The 100-year-old handmade pews can seat approximately 50 adults. Additionally, the chapel and Old City Cemetery are great destinations for field trips. The organization provides pre-tour lesson plans for students grades K-6, as well as science activities for fifth graders.

Because the gates are open dawn to dusk, this historic site is a great spot to tour every day of the year. Come visit and explore a cemetery like no other.
