The National D-Day Memorial

FacebookInstagram

On June 6th, 2001, President George W. Bush dedicated the National D-Day Memorial in honor of those who lost their lives in one of the most significant battles in U.S. history. Exactly fifty-seven years earlier, U.S. soldiers invaded the Normandy region of France in order to push German forces out of Western Europe. Because the Allied Forces suffered nearly 10,000 casualties yet prevailed in breaching Europe, President Bush stated that “America and the nations of Europe formed a bond that has never been broken.” Since this bloody day in history and one of the most pivotal battles of World War II, 60,0000 people visit the monument annually, honoring those who saved the free world.

The monument lies in Bedford, Virginia as a dedication to the large number of soldiers from the area who lost their lives in combat. In 1994, Bedford’s small population proportionally suffered the nation’s most devastating D-Day losses. Because Bedford represented both large and small American communities who faced D-Day casualties, Congress warranted the creation of the memorial in this town near Lynchburg.

The memorial’s structure encompasses 88 acres at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A monumental forty-foot tall arch stands at the center containing the carving “Overlord,” the name of the crucial operation. A reflecting pool also surrounds the site and serves as a symbol of the water the soldiers trudged through to reach the beaches. Collectively, the grounds allow visitors to experience World War II as soldiers of the period. With a solemn atmosphere, the National D-Day Memorial welcomes guests to learn about the events that shaped the history of the world and the remainder of the twentieth century. Come visit this monumental site that pays awe-inspiring tribute to the men and women who sacrificed for the future of our nation and so many others.
